Rapid Review of English Grammar is not a text for beginners. Neither is it "intermediate" or "advanced." It is a remedial text, designed for students whose knowledge of English is extensive but imperfect when they come to the United States to study in our colleges and universities. It is intended mainly for students who need English as a tool, rather than for those who plan to specialize in the language or to teach it.

It is hoped that this present volume will help towards supplying that want. The student who knows no English at all can make a beginning with this book, but those students who have already a slight knowledge of English can telescope the first ten lessons into two or three and will then find, I think, material that is new to-them.

This course has three aims. The students using it will probably have done anything up to six years' fairly intensive study of English at school and possibly at university. For years there has been insufficient provision of specific material for practice with sentences. We speak mostly in sentences, not in individual words or in unrelated verb-parts or in tricky linguistic tests. Our speech and writing are creative-the putting-together of words into sentences. And our linguistic comprehension is mostly of the meanings of sentences rather than individual words. In contemporary written and oral examinations in English more and more attention is being given to sentence-construction than to filling in blanks in sentences already constructed by the examiner.
